Perfect scores by senior Lee Rolofson and sophomore Alexia Zawadzke led East Noble's Spell Bowl team to its season-high score at Monday night's area competition, qualifying the team for the state finals.
East Noble's 75 score easily topped four other spell bowl teams at the Northridge High School Area Competition. Coach Bob Avery said he is pleased the team is peaking, with state finals ahead Nov. 12 at Purdue University in West Lafayette.
This is the 15th consecutive year Avery-coached teams have qualified for the state finals, he said. Other team scores Monday were: Northridge 53, Northwood 49, Lakeland 31 and Elkhart Christian 30.
East Noble's 75 out of a possible 90 team score was the third-highest in the state in all classes out of 183 high schools participating. The top 10 teams in East Noble's Class I division, based on student population, advanced to the finals. East Noble's perennial nemesis, Penn High School, led Class I qualifiers with a score of 89, followed by Martinsville with 85, East Noble, and Terre Haute South with a 68.
Rolofson and Zawadzke spelled nine out of nine words correctly. Seniors Logan Garrett and Mike Savage, sophomore Josh Tew and freshman Tresa Miller all had eight out nine. Senior Austin McBride and sophomore Myra Finton had sevens, while freshmen Rachel Smolinske and Dezaray Barr scored six and five respectively. Freshman Emily Savage spelled six words correctly in a supporting role, while senior Kayal Hicks missed the competition due to a family emergency, according to Avery.Back to Top
